Netflix’s ambitious live-action version of the popular manga One Piece appears to have cleared its second-season hurdle with ease. The new season, titled One Piece: Into the Grand Line, premiered globally on March 10 and has already received overwhelmingly positive reactions from critics.
Early reviews indicate a remarkable improvement over the show’s debut season. On Rotten Tomatoes, the new season achieved a perfect 100 per cent score based on the first set of reviews. This is a noticeable jump from the first season’s rating of 86 per cent.
Meanwhile, Metacritic lists the season with a score of 85 out of 100. That places it alongside several critically acclaimed television projects such as Shogun, Severance, and HBO’s Watchmen, putting the series in prestigious company.
The strong reception suggests that Netflix’s gamble on adapting one of the world’s most beloved manga franchises continues to pay off.
Global Release and Streaming Details
The second season launched worldwide on Netflix at the same moment, eliminating the staggered regional releases that sometimes frustrate viewers. The episodes became available at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time and 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time on March 10.
In keeping with Netflix’s binge-watch model, the platform released all eight episodes simultaneously. Viewers did not have to wait for weekly instalments or split drops, allowing fans to watch the entire season in one go.
To add a theatrical element to the launch, the first two episodes were also screened in selected cinemas across the United States, Canada, and Japan. Screenings began at 6:00 p.m. local time in participating theaters, including AMC, Regal, Cinemark, Alamo Drafthouse, and Cineplex locations.
The move gave fans an opportunity to experience the show’s large-scale action and visual effects on the big screen before diving into the rest of the season online.

What Story Arcs Season 2 Adapts
The new season expands the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventure by adapting multiple arcs from Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga series. All eight episodes run for roughly an hour each and collectively explore major events from the Baroque Works saga.
Among the story arcs included are Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden and Drum Island. These narratives take the Straw Hat crew into the dangerous and unpredictable waters of the Grand Line, where they encounter new enemies and mysterious organisations.
As the crew ventures deeper into the Grand Line, they find themselves facing agents of Baroque Works, a powerful group that becomes a recurring threat throughout the storyline.
The episode lineup for the season includes titles such as The Beginning and the End, Good Whale Hunting, Whiskey Business, Big Trouble in Little Garden, Wax On Wax Off, Nami Dearest, Reindeer Shames, and Deer and Loathing in Drum Kingdom.

Tony Tony Chopper Makes His Live-Action Debut
One of the biggest highlights of the season is the introduction of Tony Tony Chopper. The character, a reindeer doctor with the ability to talk and transform, is a beloved figure among fans of the original manga and anime.
Chopper serves both as comic relief and as an emotionally significant character in the Drum Island storyline. Bringing such a unique character to live action posed technical challenges, especially when blending digital visual effects with practical elements for his various transformations.
Despite those difficulties, early reactions suggest that the character works well on screen. Any initial visual awkwardness tends to fade once the character becomes part of the action and storytelling.

Critics Praise the Show’s Expanding World
Reviewers across multiple publications have highlighted the show’s growing scale and ambition. Many believe the second season deepens the world-building introduced earlier while maintaining the adventurous spirit that made the first season successful.
Critics have described the new episodes as energetic, imaginative and filled with memorable characters. Several reviews suggest the show now feels more confident in its storytelling and visual style.
One standout moment reportedly belongs to Mackenyu’s character Roronoa Zoro. The swordsman is featured in a massive action sequence where he faces off against a large group of Baroque Works agents. Critics have compared the choreography and visual intensity of the scene to the stylized action found in films like Kill Bill.
Another fan-favorite performance continues to come from Taz Skylar as Sanji. Reviewers note that the character’s charm and effortless presence remain one of the show’s strongest elements.
Interestingly, critics have pointed out that the structure of the season makes it flexible for viewers. Even though Netflix released the episodes together, the story’s episodic arcs also make it suitable for watching at a slower, week-by-week pace.

Mixed Opinions Still Exist
Although the overall reaction has been extremely positive, not every critic has been completely convinced.
One reviewer from TV Guide expressed reservations about the show’s visual style, arguing that the aesthetic occasionally feels flatter than expected for a large-budget production. The critic suggested that the look of the series sometimes resembles a quirky television fantasy rather than a high-end streaming spectacle.
Even so, the review acknowledged that the new season still represents an improvement compared to its predecessor.
Season 3 Already in Production
Netflix’s confidence in the series is evident from the fact that a third season was confirmed months before the second season even premiered.
The platform officially renewed One Piece for Season 3 in August 2025, and filming reportedly began on November 24, 2025.
There have also been changes behind the scenes. Co-showrunner Matt Owens stepped away from the project in March 2025 to focus on his mental health. Joe Tracz continued overseeing the completion of Season 2 and remains involved as the production moves forward.
Meanwhile, creator Eiichiro Oda has hinted that future episodes will push the story even further. According to him, upcoming seasons will introduce more powerful Devil Fruit users, massive new characters including giants, and even more intense action sequences supported by advanced visual effects.
With strong reviews and growing fan interest, the live-action One Piece adaptation appears set to remain one of Netflix’s most successful global franchises.
