After months of uncertainty and one of the most closely watched certification battles in recent Tamil cinema, Vijay‘s much-awaited Jana Nayagan has finally cleared its biggest hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the political action thriller an A certificate, ending a prolonged seven-month certification process that had delayed the film’s release.
The certification paves the way for the film’s theatrical release, although the makers have been instructed to implement several modifications before it reaches audiences.
Jana Nayagan Receives CBFC Clearance
The CBFC’s approval comes as a major relief for the makers after months of uncertainty surrounding the film’s certification.
Adding to the excitement, overseas distributor Ahimsa Entertainment recently released a new promotional poster carrying the tagline “One Last Time,” fueling speculation that the theatrical release announcement is now imminent.
With the censor process completed, the film has finally entered its final phase before release.
CBFC Orders 12 Cuts And Modifications
While granting certification, the CBFC directed the makers to make 12 changes to the film.
Among the most notable modifications is the alteration of a visual featuring Dr. B. R. Ambedkar on the cover of a book.
The board also instructed the makers to remove or modify dialogues referencing Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
One significant dialogue has also been altered. According to reports, the original phrase “Ambedkar sattam” has been replaced with “TVK sattam” following the board’s directions.

Visuals And Dialogues Also Modified
Apart from dialogue changes, the certification board has reportedly instructed the makers to remove a scene showing the Indian national flag falling to the ground.
Another visual featuring a DC office insignia has also been ordered to be replaced.
Several words and references have reportedly been muted, including mentions of “Bhagavatham,” “Ranganathar,” “OM,” and “New India” during a sequence involving Operation Meluha.
The CBFC has also sought modifications to certain dialogues containing abusive language and references considered sensitive.
Additionally, a visual depicting a child being burnt has reportedly been replaced, while some character names and religious references have also been altered as part of the certification process.
Long Certification Process Delayed Release
Jana Nayagan’s censor journey became one of the biggest talking points in Tamil cinema after the film was referred to a Revising Committee by CBFC Chairperson Prasoon Joshi.
The move reportedly followed complaints alleging that portions of the film portrayed religious sentiments and the armed forces in an objectionable manner.
The extended review process delayed the film’s release by several months, leaving fans waiting for updates.
Film Also Hit By Major Piracy Leak
Apart from certification issues, the production also suffered another setback when the film was reportedly leaked online in a large-scale piracy incident before its official release.
The leak raised serious concerns among the makers and distributors regarding the film’s theatrical prospects.
Despite these challenges, the project has now successfully crossed its biggest obstacle with the censor clearance.
Star-Studded Cast
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay in the lead alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju.
The supporting cast includes Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
The film is produced by Venkat K. Narayana under the KVN Productions banner and marks the production house’s debut in Tamil cinema.
While the makers have never officially commented on the comparisons, Jana Nayagan has frequently been linked on social media with the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari because of perceived similarities in its narrative.
With the CBFC process now complete, all eyes are on the makers as fans await the official announcement of Jana Nayagan’s long-delayed theatrical release.
