A divorce petition has been filed before the District Court in Chengalpattu seeking the dissolution of the marriage between Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Vijay.
The petition has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), and (d), read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The matter has now formally entered the judicial process.
According to the petition, the marriage was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. A ceremonial wedding was later held on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Egmore, Chennai, following Hindu customs.
Allegations Mentioned in the Petition
In her plea, Sangeetha has stated that the early years of the marriage were stable and harmonious. She claims she focused on managing the household and raising their children.
However, the petition alleges that in April 2021, she discovered that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. The document describes this as causing emotional distress and a breakdown of marital trust.
It further states that although assurances were allegedly given that the association would end, the relationship continued. The petition mentions claims of mental cruelty, public embarrassment linked to social media discussions, emotional neglect, and constructive desertion.

Attempts at reconciliation are also recorded in the filing. According to the plea, discussions between September 2021 and February 2022, and later between August 2024 and February 2025, did not result in an amicable settlement.
Describing the marriage as having irretrievably broken down, the petitioner has sought:
- A decree of dissolution
- Permanent alimony proportionate to Vijay’s income and public standing
- The right to reside in the matrimonial home in Neelankarai or alternative accommodation
- In-camera proceedings to protect privacy
At this stage, these remain claims presented in court. The legal process will determine the outcome.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Marriage Timeline
Vijay married Sangeetha on August 25, 1999, long before he became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars and later stepped into active politics.

Jana Nayagan Controversy Adds to Public Spotlight
Amid these personal developments, Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan has also been facing release hurdles.
The film was initially planned for a Pongal release on January 9, but did not receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The examining committee reportedly suggested a U/A certificate, subject to certain cuts. Later, the matter was referred to a revising committee following further objections.
The makers approached the court but eventually withdrew their petition and agreed to comply with the board’s decision. The Madras High Court permitted the withdrawal on February 10.
In an off-camera interaction with NDTV journalist Rahul Kanwal, Vijay reportedly acknowledged the setback and expressed disappointment with the film’s producer. He also indicated that scrutiny was expected given his political involvement.
