Tom Cruise is almost unrecognizable in the first trailer for Digger, the upcoming dark comedy from two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Sporting a pot belly, thinning hair, and a thick Southern accent, Cruise plays a billionaire whose actions trigger a global ecological disaster, setting the stage for what the makers describe as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
The film marks Cruise’s first collaboration with the acclaimed director and is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 2.
Tom Cruise’s Dramatic Transformation Steals The Spotlight
The newly released trailer introduces Cruise as Digger Rockwell, one of the world’s most powerful businessmen whose company accidentally sparks an environmental catastrophe capable of escalating into a nuclear crisis.
Far removed from his action-hero image, Cruise embraces a completely different persona, complete with extensive prosthetics, an unflattering makeover, and a larger-than-life performance packed with dark humor.
The trailer balances absurd comedy with high-stakes global tension as Digger desperately attempts to convince the world that he is humanity’s only hope.

What Is Digger About?
According to the official synopsis, Digger follows billionaire Digger Rockwell after one of his company’s projects triggers a massive ecological disaster.
As the crisis spirals out of control, threatening international stability, Digger embarks on a frantic mission to convince the world that he can fix the very catastrophe he helped create.
The trailer suggests the film will blend political satire, environmental commentary, and black comedy while exploring themes of power, ego, and media manipulation.
Star-Studded Cast Joins Tom Cruise
Alongside Tom Cruise, the film features an impressive ensemble cast including:
- John Goodman
- Riz Ahmed
- Sandra Hüller
- Michael Stuhlbarg
- Jesse Plemons
- Sophie Wilde
- Emma D’Arcy
John Goodman plays the President of the United States, who turns to Digger to solve the crisis threatening the world.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu Returns To English-Language Cinema
Digger marks Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant.
The filmmaker revealed that the idea had stayed with him for nearly a decade before evolving into the final screenplay, which he co-wrote with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Sabina Berman.
Calling the project both absurd and dangerous, Iñárritu described it as a comedy rooted in tragedy.

Tom Cruise On Working With Iñárritu
Speaking at the trailer launch, Cruise revealed he had admired Iñárritu ever since watching Amores Perros more than two decades ago.
The actor said he immediately connected with Digger after the director personally narrated the screenplay over several days instead of simply sending him a script.
Cruise also shared that he particularly enjoyed transforming into the eccentric billionaire through makeup and prosthetics, calling it one of the most creatively challenging roles of his career.
Release Date
Produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., Digger will release exclusively in cinemas on October 2.
The film also marks Tom Cruise’s first theatrical release under his production and development partnership with Warner Bros., announced in 2024.
